In the mist of the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution was about to make its way into a constant changing world. The mining industry was about to receive a face-lift due to the Industrial Revolution in more ways than one. With the invention of the steam engine, man power was being replaced with horse power. Mining methods advanced exponentially, but not without the help of Alfred Nobel and his invention of dynamite. The new invention increased mineral production and opened the gates, flooding the mining industry with potential.

As "Mom and Pop mines" advanced, mineral excavation soared and loaded up the Industrial Revolution with a mountain of metals. However, not enough steel could be produced to keep up with increasing demands. The fast-paced industry drew much needed attention toward the high risk-factors that pertain to the handling of explosives. Therefore, different types of blasting caps were developed to lower the risks involved while working with explosives.
